History of Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy goes back farther then you think. It started in the B.C. era. People used
different massage techniques way before all the technology that we have today. There wasn't much demand for physical therapists
until the early 1900's. In 1914-1915 there was a huge Polio epedemic sweeping the country. There was a slight increase in
the demand for physical therapists. In 1921 the American Physical Therapy Association was founded. In the 1940's-1950's physical
therapist became in even greater demand. With World War II and the polio epidemic going on more and more people were needing
care. WWII soliders were coming back with injuries that involved a lot of rehabilitation. The number of physical therapy education
programs at that time grew from 16 to 39!
Since then, there has been many advances in the physical therapy field. Today the demand for physical
therapists is still high and continuing to grow.
